This new building was opened in 2017 and for many of us it had committed the cardinal sin of having been the reason the old Student Union building had been demolished. Against my initial feelings I actually quite like it. It sits the opposite side of Founders Square and perversely seems to complement Founders by being so completely different.
Whilst often referred to as 'The New Library' it is actually far more than that. In addition to the Library it houses the College archives, a Student services centre, a careers advice service, Exhibition centre as well as a cafe and shop. It's main windows overlook the Founder's Building. The area between it and Founders has also been totally changed - gone are the car parking areas to be replaced by a paved area with space for outdoor gatherings and exhibitions. There is also a huge verandah area on a subroof of one side that affords amazing views towards London as well as towards Founders. On a clear day the Wembley Arch and The Shard are both visible.
